51. Rene Steer

Luton born left back Rene Steer is another long-serving Hale End boy, after being scouted and signed from his school team aged 13.

His rate of development may have been fairly low key, but what Rene brings to the team is certainly something to shout about. His hard working, physical and nonsense approach as won the plaudits of opposition managers throughout the country, and has proved a vital asset to both the Academy and Reserve teams.

Known as a more traditional full back, Steer had clearly taken experience from first team training sessions and has added a new attacking threat to his game. A wonderful crosser of the ball, he has shown he is not afraid to shoot – although is yet to bag a competitive goal.

It’s been organised Cup football where the youngster has really thrived, with great performances in both the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens tournament, and the prestigious FA Youth Cup.

Pushing through into the first team has been a more difficult challenge, and with the likes of Gael Clichy and Armand Traore already here, it is no wonder. However, he did play 45 minutes of the pre-season friendly against Barnet, and showed off his new attacking mentality with several menacing runs.
