Luke Ayling

Luke Ayling was Arsenal’s most improved player during the 2008-2009 campaign after transforming himself from somebody being linked with having their contract cancelled, to a defender being lauded by scouts up and down the country.
Luke came through the Hale End Academy as a lanky central defender but was given a shock run out for the Reserves whilst he was still a school boy against Charlton during the 06-07 season. He played the final few minutes on the right wing and impressed manager Neil Banfield.
He signed a scholarship months later and featuring mainly as a central defender, Luke’s prowess in the air and instinctive passing saw him make 23 appearances for the Academy outfit as they won Group A.
Ayling’s willingness to play where-ever needed impressed. Operating in midfield proved to be no problem as he produced tireless displays from both defensive and attacking situations. A handful of outings for the Reserves brought frustration as he was regarded very much as a squad player, but when called upon Banfield knew what the Londoner will bring to the table – a high energy, uncompromising performance.
And after his superb form as part of the 2008-2009 double winning squad, Banfield returned to hand a refreshed Ayling his chance to turned out for the second string once more. All in all he played in 9 Reserves League South fixtures and shone on every occasion.
Guardian Sports writer Steve Claridge lauded the centre half in one his famous ‘Scouting Reports’, and following interest from Chelsea, who he grew up supporting, Liam Brady rewarded his efforts with a professional contract in July 2009.

Put the lad anywhere, from the center of the midfield all the way into the center of the goal! Outstanding prospect it sounds like, I would love to see more london-based prospects turn into successful first team players from the Academy… or sell them for a tidy profit

i’ve seen him play in right back and he is outstanding. with his level of energy, its a waste if he remains a centerback.

His height is 185cm now, he has grown taller, he just needs to improve his physical strength plus gaining experience at lower league & premiership then he will be ready.

Luke Ayling has now signed pro’ forms as of June 2009. Looked very good in the Youth Cup matches, lets hope he continues to develop & proves a valuable player for the future.

Luke Ayling is my personal favourite, he reads the game very well, intercepts lots of balls thus negating having to dive into tackles all the time, excellent in the aerial duels, ok speed, very good composure, good use of the ball with his excellent technique & 1.85m tall. All he needs is game experience @ 1st team level & improvement physically.

Really rate him from what I have seen so far… at one of the youth cup games I heard an older Arsenal supporter say he reminded them of David O’Leary, that sounds like a big compliment to me.

Hes 17 as well i can see him growing taller and getting more stronger. Hes going to be some talent. Hes looks a strong leaders as well. Hes should be captain for the youth team. I cant believe england youth selectors havent got him in thier squads.
